Pupils investigate how to maximise the volume of a box under constraints.

Evaluating quadratic functions, and plotting quadratic (ideally cubic) graphs.

1. Establish with pupils that you are trying to maximise the volume of the cuboid created.

2. Distribute one copy of the A3 pupil sheet to each pupil, or pair of pupils if preferred.

3. Pupils can work through the tasks at their own pace, but you may want to explain - if it has not already been established in lessons - that the max value of a function can be identified from a graph, it being a local maximum.

*I recommend printing off a copy of the teacher sheet for reference as pupils work through tasks.
