Based on the classic T-totals activity, this resource guides pupils into spotting patterns, and expressing the relationships algebraically.

Forming expressions/equations and solving simple equation such as the below equation is required to answer all questions.

$5 L + 10 = 25$

You may choose to use this activity, however, as an opportunity to teach this method.

1. Distribute one copy of A3 pupil sheet for each pupil, or pair if preferred.

2. Quickly explain the ideas of L-numbers and calculating L-totals.

3. Set pupils off on the activity and have copy of teacher sheet with you for reference.

*Pupils may ask 'what happens if the L-shape goes off of the grid'? You can either say that we are not considering those cases, or that the first square or squares on the next line would complete an L which is going off of the grid.
