Quick Description

A fun task and very accessible task investigating the number of moves required to complete a game of Jenga.

This activity works with small groups. Pupils would ideally have access to some Jenga bricks, and work in pairs.

I suggest 15 or 18 bricks for every 2 pupils.

Prior Knowledge

Forming simple linear expressions such as 6(L1)6 \left ( L - 1 \right ) or equivalent.

Instructions

  1. Let the learners play a few games with small towers. This may help them to realise that the bottom layers will always go to a single brick, and also that attempting to remove a single brick layer is futile!
  1. Learners can then work through questions at their own pace although it may be sensible to clarify what is meant by an 'inactive' brick with a quick demonstration.
